After being a common practice during the days of Indus valley civilisation, ittars gained popularity again during the Mughal era..

Everyone, the king and the nobles at the royal court would apply ittars.

Attar of Kannauj had its roots in the bath tub of Mughal empress Noorjahan.

As the story goes crushed rose petals used to be poured into the bath tub hours before the empress took her bath. One morning she noticed an oily substance floating over the surface of the water. It was a sort of eureka as the most exquisite "rooh gulab" was discovered. Attar or Itr (meaning: perfume) was thus born. Once Noorjahan showed her passion for rooh gulab, Kannauj slowly but steadily emerged as the 'Perfume City' of India.
